Got robbed - new shit!
Well, it's been another while. I'm becoming rather bad at maintainig this here site.
Here's what's happenned on my end. I'll be posting about the student strike at a later time, if you want.
I got robbed - my house got broken into, mid-March. They stole my two computers, all my 250+ CDs, my two 35mm cameras, my two CD players and my mixer. They also emptied out my freezer.
I'm insured, though. So, after the grief of losing 10+ years of accumulated emails, contact info, bookmarks,my massive mp3 collection and whatnot, I get the pleasure of getting all brand new shit.
This means two new computers - one for my mom, and one for myself. The one for my mom is still a beast, for what she uses: 3.1GHz, 512MB, 80GB SerialATA, DVD burner and all that jazz, just basically for writing email, using Word, and playing Freecell.
My PC, though, is a force to be reckoned with. I'm pretty sure it would kill Death itself - Athlon64 3000, 2GB RAM Dual-Channel (4x512), 400GB Striped RAID SerialATA (2x200), DVD burner, in a nice Antec Sonata case. Woot.
My CD collection is also quite nice, now. I got to spend two hours and a half in HMV, picking and choosing my CDs, and got only two-thirds or so. The rest, they didn't have in stock, and are ordering for me. And, since I didn't quite remember every single title I had, let's just say that the mean quality of my discography just rose significantly. I'm slowly getting them all transfered to FLAC and mp3, so I'll transfer them to my new MuvoTX. It's a mammoth job, with less than half done, and already 8 DAYS' worth of music, and over 8GB of mp3 files.
My mixer, I'm getting the same model I had. As far as the CD players go, I decided to upgrade to Numark CDN-36s, which are DJ-style, pro CD players. They're worth about $900, but I got them online for cheaper than the cheapest Numark model in Canada. Thanks, eBay!
The cameras are also a spot where we end up winners: from two old 35mm cameras, one compact and one SLR, we get ourselves a Canon A95 (for mom) and, for myself, the übersexy Canon Rebel XT.
I'm a happy camper.

Time and money
Well, I'll be working more hours for the next month. I'm actually very ambivalent towards that.
First, I need the cash. 10 extra hours a week (that's only one week; I don't know the exact schedule until tomorrow) means around ninety extra dollars in my pocket. That means Visa gets paid, and that means I'm happy.
But, also, I need the time. My schedule is packed with reading, studying and paper-writing. It's huge. It's a humongous amount of work - sheer craziness.
We'll see which one I needed most at the end of the month. With a little discipline, I should be good, though. I just need to learn to read and write long-ass papers more efficiently.

The Countdown
On the right, in the sidebar, you'll notice that the toaster is no longer.
Instead, you have a number. Right now, it's 29.
That's the number of books I've got to read between now and April 11th, exactly 75 days from now. That's one book every 2,6 days. I can handle it.
The countdown will get updated to let you in on my progress. Should go fast.

Two weeks have passed, and a little political rant.
Well, I've been bad.
I haven't updated this thing in two weeks, or more. I'm really sorry.
Just to keep you up to date on what's happened:
- Endterms were rushing me like mad
- Then, the Christmas period, and all it entails in retail (upped hours, less sleep, shopping, you know the drill), and
- School started again, on January 5th. Methinks it's a tad early, but, what can you do.
Besides, I'll be on vacation starting April 9th, or so. Yippee.
I've also been quite busy with my school message board. No, you won't get to see it, unless you're studying french lit at Montreal U. Sorry.
(Or, you could try pestering me and maybe I'll let you in. Maybe.)
I can't sleep right now, which is why I'm spending a few seconds writing stuff in here.
Since this isn't a LiveJournal, and I'm not just writing about my exciting lifestyle on this here piece o' the web, let me try my hand at some political ramblings.
If you're in Canada, you've heard about the sponsorship scandal. If you're not, let me break it down: about half (a bit less, actually) of Quebec voters want the province to separate from Canada and form a new country. I'm actually very much for that, but this is entirely besides the point. What happened is, after the 1995 referendum (lost by a margin of about 30,000 votes, give or take, by the separatists), the central government got anxious. They decided to set up a sponsorship program, that would expose every living thing in Quebec (and specifically Quebec) to a big Canadian flag wherever he/she/it went. Local, regional and even international events (from the country rodeo in some hick town to the F1 Grand Prix) were sponsored by Ottawa, thus spending millions of dollars to "Support Canadian Unity".
Waste of money. But that's not the scandal.
What we learned, after a while, is that the firms getting the contracts to sponsor these events actually didn't spend that money. They kept it. Period.
And guess what? These firms (they're two or three, I believe) were heavy donators to the Liberal Party. Friends of the regime, some might say.
And where are the demonstrations? The calls for dismissal, or Martin stepping down? Where is your mother fucking outrage, Canada?
It's been two weeks, now, that the Tsunami was in the news. Now, I don't want to say that it's not important, because it is. But, dontcha think some important stuff is happening, right here, too? Who's covering this shit? CPAC, and that's it.
Oh, and a tiny blurb on page 38 of your newspaper.
The ROC (Rest Of Canada - 9 provinces, 3 territories; not Quebec) should be outraged that Ottawa spent so much of their money on keeping us in. Quebec should be outraged that Ottawa spent so much of our money convincing us that being in is better than being out.
And every God damned Canadian should be outraged that our country is turning to shit, getting closer and closer to a banana republic every day.
Single-party elections? Check.
Unstoppable leader who can do what ever he wants? Check.
US approval of our regime? Check.
No citizen-participation in the political process? Check.
Leaders handing down the PM seat like an absolute right? Check.
Laughable opposition parties who bicker amongst themselves instead of throwing shit at the government?
Mother. Fucking. Check.

Voting: Free versus Slave States
Voting: Free versus Slave States paints a funny picture.
Why am I not surprised?
Incidentally, yes, I am aware I haven't posted here in, like, forever. I will remedy that shortly.

Northern lights
I just saw an amazing display of northern lights, right outside my home. Gigantic, greenish-white waves of light streaking through the skies, filling about half the starry globe with a ghostly, evanescent glow. And then, nothing. Just a starry, inky void.
I'm turning into a poet. Better go to bed now, before it gets worse.

Holy shit! This is getting ridiculous!
According to USA Today (where we take real news and make them into easy-to-understand pie charts!), some Texaspharmacist refuses to give out The Pill to his patient and gets away with it.
This is fucking crazy. Says the woman who missed a pill because of the fucktard: "Their job is not to regulate what people take or do. It's just to fill the prescription that was ordered by my physician."
The article keeps on: "Some pharmacists, however, disagree and refuse on moral grounds to fill prescriptions for contraceptives. And states from Rhode Island to Washington have proposed laws that would protect such decisions", it says.
Ri-god-damned-diculous.
And it gets better: some asshat in Madison, WI, not only refused to fill the prescription (which is stupid as it is - do these people think they're doctors?), but "did not transfer it to another pharmacist or return it to the woman."
Wow. I'm speechless.

If I was your friend, I'd say "I'm very disappointed in you."
Really. If I was your mom, I'd be all "Wait 'till your father gets home!"If I was your girlfriend, I'd go "How could you do this to me?" If I was your priest, I'd be yelling "Repent!"
But I'm not. I'm just the entire world, looking at you with shame, America.
Shame, shame, shame on you.
(at least turnout was almost good)

Election night in the States - Addendum
Well, call me a wuss, but it's past 2AM and I'm going to bed.
CNN's calling Ohio "Too close to call", giving us a tally of GWB-249, JFK-211.
CBS was rather aggressive with their calling states earlier, but have calmed down now. They're giving 249-221, calling Minnesota for Kerry, something CNN hasn't done yet.
NBC gives Ohio to Bush, and still refuses to give either Minnesota or New Hampshire to Kerry, meaning they say it's 269-207.
FOX News says it's 269-221. Well, it's Fox, so, you know.. it doesn't really matter.
Seeya tomorrow!

Election night in the States
Tonight, I'll be watching the Election 2004 coverage, mostly on CNN.
I'll be taking a short break, however, between 10PM and 11PM - that's when Jon Stewart comes out with his Election Night 2004: Prelude to a Recall special. That'll be amazing.
If you didn't go vote, shame on you. If you did, then good.
If you did, and you voted Democrat, then double-plus-good.

Update! It seems I live in Sodom and/or Gomorrah
According to the Daily News Tribune, the Montreal spring break trip is also a "dangerous, unsanctioned and unsupervised sex and booze trip to Canada", filled with "drunken rowdiness" and, two years ago, "a group was kicked out of a hotel after teens threw beer bottles and televisions off the hotel balconies". Kids come back with "frightening stories from nightclubs and strip clubs".
I don't know about the ones in Massachusetts, but our strip clubs aren't scary at all...
I don't know about the ones in Massachusetts, but our strip clubs aren't scary at all...
I live in Babylon
Fears over drinking put end to high school trip, says the Boston Globe.
So parents are preventing their kids from coming to Montreal, cause they might be drinking? Ha!
I can barely spend a weekend in Montreal when there's a long holiday weekend in Vermont, Massachusetts or New York. Suddenly, the city gets filled with drunken teens, flashing their American money around like we're Cuba or Somalia and it somehow made us respect them more, and it often ends up in small group fights in the streets. Our police doesn't even pretend to care anymore.
Seriously, what do you think the kids do, when they're 19 years old and can't drink? They come to Montreal, where they can, starting at 18.
"We've heard rumors of prostitution, and lax marijuana policy means it's more accessible", said one Boston principal, after getting called by a Montreal journalist. Indeed, those things are true. And that's why your kids come here.
Plus, we've got strippers.
